Meaning up what is learning.

Looking back to who I am in 2000. A graduate who just finished his study. Looking here and there for a job vacancy that suit with my qualification. With the rapid changes in ICT, I feel that I am left behind with a lot of new technologies coming up at that time. I guess I'm 'lucky' because I learn more during my study (but I study less) by exploring new software and technology in ICT especially in multimedia. I can't explain why I have a deep interest on it. I learn lot of thing beyond that what been delivered in the lectures or academic, most of them are from Internet. Exploring and learning through trial software help me a lot to gain confidence and give added value on me when I reach the finale.

Once upon a time, I was a little child. Learning to walk and touch the world in front of me.
Once upon a time, I was a young boy. Learning to run and catch the world in front of me.
Once upon a time, I was a bachelor. Learning to win and take the world in front of me.
And now, I am a man. Learning to sacrifice and give the world in front of me.
But still now and forever, I am a little child and young boy to my lovely parents. Still much more to learn to touch and win their heart for all time that left for me.

I like something but I don't get it.
When I don't get what I like, I don't like what I get.

It is too ideal to get ALL what we like. Sometime we may get what we like. Most of the time we don't. And all the time we must have faith for everything is been given to us.

Success is depend on what you define. Dealing with unpleasant emotion because didn't get what we wanted by having faith and do the best perhaps is the first and iterated steps to the destination called SUCCESS. If you do, then you getting there.

In every corner in my life, I see myself always facing with choices. Choice that lead to who I am. I am now because what I did and what I had decide in the past. How about the future? The word future quite interesting to most of us. I can't remember who said that it is PEOPLE who frame and shape the future not a technology, qualification nor knowledge. PEOPLE with WISDOM will shape a better future not only for him but for others and the universe. How to pose the wisdom? What is wisdom? Is it a truth of thing? A Mirror in my child....

How we can feel the great of love? How our old folks love us so much with no condition. How many time we feel it? Can we feel it now?Everyday? Everymoment of time? As we are too busy with our ambition and the future, sometime we might forget that precious treasure in our life. Love from them, they who gave birth, took care, be together with us as we were growing up. When I see my first child is growing up and learn so many thing, I see myself from my father's eyes. The feeling, the love, the sweet of life, the joy are striking my heart so deep inside. Thank you Lord for this feeling as I see a mirror in my child.

Determination on vision

CHANGE...a really meaningful word to everybody. I guess that what makes Obama win as a president. All of us is changing. At least time has change the duration of how long we have live so far. In other word, it changes how long our life is left in this world a.k.a the moment of death is closer and closer.

What I want to raise here is what is the best key-factor that having a big impact on human life to CHANGE. I guess it must come from the mindset. I mean a RIGHT mindset. Right for us can be wrong to others. It must be guided and not just following what people did without knowing the meaning or purpose of the action. Having faith is the best way I think.

HOPE is a powerful weapon to initiate the readiness in the mindset for a person to change. But hope is meaningless if there is nothing that we hope for. What we hope for start with our VISION or DREAM. How close we can REACH it perhaps rely on our DETERMINATION by thinking and acting CREATIVELY. A product of CREATIVE work is INNOVATION. The word innovate itself means CHANGE. CHANGE to a BETTER condition.

So, let's INNOVATE how we teach our graduate now for a new world.

Perception of blogging

This is the first entry for 2009 in this blog. Lazy to write? Naaaahhhh, I don't think so because almost everyday I read and write posting in our official portal's forum. But I wonder, there are people or at least a person who can write a blog frequently but cannot talk/discuss in forum for academic purpose. Or should I say for work improvement. I guess different people see differently how their action could give benefit for them. See the glass above? What do you see? Is your glass half full or half empty? Either one is true but again it is about how we 'see' thing or see about our self. Come on, let's share our thought to make a better world.

Wishing for a better way doing job for a better work outcomes. Better, better and better if not the best of all.

When a friend passed away...

Life, many people love to talk about. Childhood, student, work, hoby, interest, marriage, career, love etc. All about life. Maybe we can count how frequent we talk or think about death. We only heard about it, not about us for sure because we still alive but its about other people. We heard. We know. And again about other people. Again we heard.

I realize how fast time is ticking and taking our precious moment when our windows of life is been 'knocked' by death. I think I'm running out of time. So much to do with less time is left. It was true when we think on death, all small things are wiped-out and what left is a significant one.

Today, I got an email from MDeC.Its about someone I knew. She had passed away. She is Shajaratuldur Suhaimi, who previously working with MDeC. She had help us so much in giving support and opportunity to being part in MDeC's programme. Thank you so much Sha. Suddenly the same feeling comes when I witnessed my twin daughter gone. When someone I knew is gone, my heart is freezing and eyes filled with tears. Al-Fatihah.

Letting go...

When we are so committed on doing something, it seems to me that we are so attached or feeling as part of it. I think in under certain circumstances or re-prioritizing priority, the best way is to let it go though it might hurt us or seems 'fool' to others.

Fall in love on what we are doing is a remedy to a commitment especially in career or study or relationship. Teaching is a job that I love. It is not a job to me but it is a duty. A duty that I treat as a hobby. A hobby that gives me a pleasure on doing it and could pay my expenses as well. Thanks God for this opportunity given to me. Feeling good on what I am doing. Feel great actually to witness how people change for a better life including myself.

I saw many people passed away. I witnessed many families and relatives in sadness when it come to death news. Death, is it the end of life? At least it is true to the context of life in this world. Do we know when is our date of death? Nobody knows. After watching a video from Dr. Randy Pausch, suddenly I am rethinking what do I want actually in my life. I mean what I do really want. Wanted most. Top priority. Yes, it is really inspiring and it is successfully open up my mind. Still.

I am thinking on going back and looking for a new job in my hometown. Just to stay close with my old folks. Does it sounds rational or professional? Leaving all what have been built here and start it over at a new place? Thinking on myself, yes it does not make any sense at all. Thinking on others especially my father and mother, it makes me a little bit hesitate to stay and more confident to go back and stay close to them. Perhaps, career is not what I wanted most. I want to be kind, responsible and appreciate all moments that left for me and my parents. Sounds too idealistic perhaps. We never know who will 'go' first. Maybe this will be my last posting. We never know. Either I or they, I want to maximize my pay back to all what they had done that makes who I am today.

Conclusion? Sometime we or I need to learn how to let go and start a new pathway. Letting go and letting go.

Book that significantly change my mind

I can say this book had change my view on how we should educate our student, the future generation. It is not something new rather than a review on our current education system where we have neglected little by little the essence of education through many years in education system. I can say me myself had been tighted by the system earlier without having a strong understanding and appreciation the principles, the fundamentals and the philosophy, the reason or should I say the wisdom of the system. People create the system for people to follow. But following the system without knowing the reason or the philosophy behind it will create a big mental block for process innovation or what people now call it business intelligence.

I am a teacher.

Teaching, a job that I love most. Sharing what I had. Making other people know what they didn't know. The more I share the knowledge, the more it comes to me. Perhaps it might be the way how I could get through all this academic journey, is by 'teaching' others when I was a student.

After few years in teaching (although it is not long compared to others), it is quite obvious for me to reflect on what I am doing (teaching). I've been wondering how to be a competence teacher so I can teach effectively. Research is the answer. I've been looking for definition (by researcher & practitioner) what is competency in teaching, what is effective teaching etc. Looking for measurable and computable parameters to become a competence teacher.

Teaching is a communication skill. Communication is defined as a process for sending and receiving message through a medium. There will be two parties (at least) involved, the sender and the receiver. The message need to be verified or acknowledged by the receiver to ensure it is understood the same as the sender. In the teaching context, lets look closely the important ingredients in order to comply with definition of communication.

Sender is a teacher. The sender must have the message to be sent to the recipient. It can be measured based on teacher's academic qualification or other proof of certification that the teacher is knowledgeable in the subject matter.

Receiver or recipient is the student. Definition? When they registered for the course. Registration for a specific program of study required certain requirements as a measurement.

How about the medium? Perhaps the way how we teach and assess student are the medium either by lecturing, reading assignment, answering question etc. This can be measured by peers or even student themselves either the way how we teach really makes student able to understand or not. If majority of them didn't understand at all what we teach, it means that the teacher needs to improve his/her communication skill. Measuring this part also can be the planning for teaching and designing the right assessment. The place where the teaching and learning took place also must be look into consideration.

Verification and acknowledge will be the assessment. Assessments verify student's understanding of the message and abilities according to the learning outcomes (goal). This part only we as a teacher clearly put measurement which resulting student's performance. It is really rare to reflect on teacher's performance. If the same teacher taught the same courses for few times, it should be an improvement in term of student performance even there was different group of student. It should not be the same figure of who getting 'A' and failed.

This is just my thought, to say that

Teacher competence = Academic qualification + effective medium utilization + student performance.

Just part of effective teaching. It took another part to take to another level. The another part is teacher's commitment. Its more on teacher's motivation and interest in the subject matter as well as in teaching (the task). Teacher's willingness to get through with hard student, poor attitude and weak in basic knowledge. Teacher's fairness to all student regardless the level of academic performance.

My view on my student suddenly has changed when I become a father to my daughter. If we can let the children learn and play according to their curiosity, then I have been thinking on stimulating my student's curiosity to learn my course rather than just getting to passed or even getting A for the qualification purpose. It doesn't work well for a long term especially for professional development. It is not an easy job but I love tough and challenging job. It makes me different, better and wiser for my career as well as for my life as a whole.

Ya Allah, please give me strength to sustain, to excel, to bring goodness in this duty for ummah. I pray every breath every step I take, all of them is because of You. Amin.

Untuk mengajar, buatlah penyelidikan tentang siapa yang nak diajar, bagaimana untuk mengajar, keutamaan di dalam mengajar dan dengan siapa kita perlu belajar. Agak ramai yang boleh mengajar tetapi ada satu tahap yang agak mencabar bagi seorang pengajar memastikan supaya ilmu yang diajar dapat membentuk manusia dengan terdidik iman dan akhlaknya pada Pencipta. Tetapi awas jika tiada ilmu tentang sesuatu, jangan anda sesekali cuba mengajar pada orang lain. Bimbang membawa kesesatan.

Menyelidik - selidikilah alam ini. Agar kebenaran yang diperolehi dapat mendekatkan diri kita pada-Nya. Dan sampaikanlah ianya kepada mereka yang masih belum mengetahuinya dengan mengajar dan menulis. Ia menuntut si penulis untuk berfikir. Kebenaran hari ini, dunia mengajar perlu berubah agar masa depan yang dibentuk menjadi lebih baik. Mungkin kebenarannya ialah sentiasa membuat perubahan. Asasnya ialah dengan membaca dan memerhati.

Menulis - cara penyampaian dan perkongsian mesej (ilmu) yang boleh bertahan lama (sustainable). Kemahiran yang timbul apabila seseorang punyai ilmu dengan bacaan dan pemerhatian. Hari ini menulis bukan lagi sesuatu yang janggal kerana sudah ramai yang sudah celik huruf, dapat mengenal A B C dan menulis malah punyai blog yang senantiasa ada apa yang hendak ditulis. Ada satu tahap yang diri ini sendiri masih belum capai, menulis dengan penuh kebijaksanaan kerana masih banyak yang hendak dipelajari dan diketahui. Diri ini berdoa agar tatkala menulis, si penulis dan si pembaca hampir pada-Nya.

How to 'hibernate' like Windows XP in Mac OS X

BOOT CAMP (Free from Apple Inc)

For this one, you need:-
1. Mac computer with Intel based processor.
2. Boot Camp - this is to create a second hard disk partition where you can install the second operating system (OS) either Windows or Linux. You can find your Boot Camp utility from Application>Utilities>Boot Camp Assistant.

For details on installation, find it on official Apple website at http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

3. Windows/Linux Installation CD.

VMWARE FUSION (Free 30-days trial)
The second way is by using VMWare Fusion. This one I am still exploring with the trial.

What you need are:-
1. VMWare Fusion- to create a virtual machine (the second OS). You can download the trial from VMWare official website at http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/

2. Windows/Linux Installation CD.

HOW TO RUN WINDOWS APPLICATION WHILE LOG IN MAC OS X ENVIRONMENT?

If you install VMWare Fusion, meaning you are running the second OS in Mac OS X. So you can run any application in the second OS while running Mac OS X.

Another option is by installing Parallel Desktop, functioning like VMWare Fusion to run Windows (or other second OS installed) while running Mac OS X. Also can be downloaded the trial version before you decided to buy at http://www.parallels.com/en/download/desktop/

I am thinking on experimenting to install more than two OS let say we have Mac OS X, Windows XP/Vista and Linux Ubuntu. Need to get external hard disk first to backup with Time Machine first. I shall put in here after that experiment is done.

Great Feeling With Acknowledged Sharing

Yesterday on 23rd May 2008, I have been requested by BPA to demonstrate a software related with screen capture known as Adobe Captivate. I thought it was just a demo about how it can be used to help us creating user manual but it was an express mode of training actually. Anyway, we manage to master the basic function in the software within 2 hours. There will be another training related with that software for PTMK's staff on this 27 May 2008. Feel so great that I can share what I know, what I master at with people and helping them significantly in their work.

How to Learn?

Telling by lecturing is not everything in teaching. To make student learn better and more are keys to serve the purpose of teaching. You may agree and disagree with me. But do think deeply what really makes us become a better person today, is it because what has been told to us(in lecture) or is it because of what you had discovered or seek by yourself that makes significant changes in your life. The changes may on what we don't know till we know, the way we think, the principles that we hold or perhaps changing by making our belief become stronger, solid or firm.

To discover, we really need to explore the knowledge. Exploration needs research, courage, passion, confident, roadmap, guideline, and destination. We are thinking while exploring because we need to analyze, criticize, creative and innovative along the way particularly in academic journey and in life generally. It happens in our mind and by ourself.
